Turn Tally Form Responses into a Filterable Website Directory

Connect Tally to EmbedDirectory and turn free form submissions into a live directory on your website. The simplest, fastest way to go from form to published directory.

Tally is one of the simplest form builders available — and its free plan includes unlimited forms and submissions. Connect it to EmbedDirectory and every form response becomes a submission in your approval queue. You review and approve each entry before it goes live in your directory.

This is a great fit for team directories, resource libraries, startup directories, or any project where you want a fast, no-cost path from form to published directory.

Before You Start

You'll need an EmbedDirectory account and a Tally account. Set up your directory with listing fields before connecting Tally — having your directory structure ready makes the field mapping step faster.

Why Tally Works Well for Directory Submissions

Tally strips away the complexity of most form builders. What makes it work for directories:

  • Free unlimited forms — Tally's free tier has no submission limits and no form count limits, so you can collect directory entries without paying for another tool
  • Notion-like simplicity — the form builder feels like writing in a document, so you can create a submission form in minutes
  • Clean webhook support — Tally's webhook setup is straightforward, making the connection to EmbedDirectory fast and reliable
  • No account walls — contributors can submit without creating a Tally account, keeping the barrier to entry low

Nothing goes live automatically. Each response hits your approval queue, where you decide what gets published.

Step 1: Connect Tally in Your Dashboard

  1. Go to Integrations in your EmbedDirectory dashboard
  2. Find the Tally card and click Connect
  3. Give your integration a name (e.g., "Resource Submission Form")
  4. Click Get Started

A Webhook URL will appear. You'll paste this into Tally in the next step, so keep it handy.

Step 2: Add the Webhook to Tally

  1. Open your form in Tally
  2. Click the Integrations tab
  3. Find Webhooks and click Connect
  4. Paste the Webhook URL from your EmbedDirectory dashboard
  5. Click Connect webhook
Tip

Tally forms are fast to create — if you don't have one yet, you can build a submission form in just a few minutes. Add fields that match your directory (name, description, website, category) and connect.

Step 3: Send a Test Submission

Submit a test entry through your Tally form. Fill in all the fields with sample data so EmbedDirectory can detect what information your form collects.

Your EmbedDirectory dashboard will automatically detect the test submission. This usually takes a few seconds.

Step 4: Map Your Form Fields

Once the test submission is received, your dashboard will show a field mapping screen. This is where you tell EmbedDirectory which Tally field maps to which directory field.

For each field, choose what it maps to:

  • Listing Name — the name of the listing (e.g., business name, person's name)
  • Description — a description or bio
  • Address — a physical address (for map-based directories)
  • Your custom fields — any fields you've set up in your directory
  • Don't import — skip fields you don't need

Tally labels fields by the question text you wrote, so labels tend to be clean and readable. A preview shows sample data so you can verify everything looks right. Click Save Mapping when you're done.

Step 5: You're All Set

Your integration is now active. From here, every Tally form submission follows this flow:

  1. The submission appears in your Submissions dashboard
  2. You review the entry and edit any fields if needed
  3. Approve it to publish as a live listing, or reject it
Info

All submissions require your approval before they appear in the directory. You're always in control of what gets published.

Tips for Tally + EmbedDirectory

  • Free tier covers most directory use cases — Tally's free plan supports unlimited forms, unlimited submissions, and webhooks, so you likely won't need to upgrade
  • Keep forms simple — Tally's strength is simplicity. Fewer fields means more completed submissions and cleaner directory data
  • One form per directory — to use a different Tally form, disconnect the current one and set up the new connection
  • Added new fields to your form? Send another test submission so EmbedDirectory can detect the new fields, then update the mapping
